The overall contribution of the Nagaon district towards the economy of Assam has always remained significant. In this district, out of 4435.3 sq. km of total land area, forests cover about 350 sq. km of land as per 1991 census, but with the publication of latest census result, it has been revealed that the district forest cover and total forest area has been reduced to 223.54 sq. km only, as on March 2001. Though the forest area has been recorded as 223.54 sq. km by the Government, yet in reality the forest coverage area would not be more than 150 sq. km in throughout the district.
