Before too long, the Salween plunder will fade from memoryjust like Thailand's once majestic forest cover. The loggers and their influential pals in the departments, the ministries, in parliament and in uniform will then pick another patch of green torender brown and barren. A provincial governor has been transferred to oblivion, the director-general of the Forestry department and a deputy have been removed and the chief of the army region responsible for the area has been promoted. Investigatory committees are investigating and the undeclared war against the forests continues. A lesson learnt? Not a chance. (editorial)
