It is heartening to hear that the Government plans to extend the relief in the form of loan waiver to all the farmers in the country. But one may ask: Why farmers only? Why not other sections of society, some of whom are suffering as much or even more. If the Government does not look into their interests as well, it may win the favour of only one section of society. For example, consider the plight of parents who have taken educational loans for higher studies of their children. If their children do not get good jobs on completion of the course, the educational loans are declared as non-performing assets (NPAs) and banks/financial institutions press hard for repayments by resorting to measures such as selling the collateral securities in the case of loans of over Rs 4 lakh. Collateral security is available in the cases of loans to the farmers also. It would be more prudent if the loan waiver amounts are invested in setting of industries in different parts of the country, districts-wise. For instance, the present loan waiver amount of over Rs 70,000 crore-plus could be used to set up industrial units costing Rs 140 crore each in 500 districts. This will help in the overall development of the country and the borrowers
