WIld Banana variety spotted in TN forests

The Tamil Nadu Forest officials have come across 'musa acuminata' or wild banana in the Anaimalai forest area of Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, adding to the bio-diversity of the Western Ghats. The species, originally belonging to the Malay peninsula and belived to have given birth to all edible and semi-edible banana varieties through hybridisation with 'musa balbisiana', was spotted during one of the routine plant exploration expeditions recently, the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary Warden, Mr V Ganesan said.
