GUILHERME ALMEIDA If Curtorim villagers have sounded the bugle of agitation for the closure of the Sonsodo garbage dump, the authorities should blame themselves for the pathetic state of affairs there. Ask the member of the govt-appointed committee to oversee the situation, Microbiologist Dr Joe D'Souza. He says the situation is indeed "grim' at Sonsodo and want the civic body and all concerned to take the matter seriously before things go out of control. Dr D'Souza is particularly concerned over the discharge of millions of litres of leachate in the open drain, apprehending the waste water would contaminate wells and water bodies in the locality. Unlike other municipal and panchayat areas, Margao has been fortunate enough to have in its jurisdiction a half-a-century old dumpyard for garbage disposal. But indifference, callousness and apathy from the local civic body and the government has saturated Sonsodo with garbage. The government's Rs7.84-crore garbage treatment plant has not seen the light of the day
