The encephalitis in north Bengal has reached 108, with three more deaths being reported from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. At least 370 cases of infection have been referred to NBMCH and Jalpaiguri Hospital in the last fortnight, said a senior official of NBMCH.
Meanwhile, a team of specialist doctors is slated to visit north Bengal, after BJP MP S S Ahluwalia and Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury raised the issue in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
According to sources, the state government has received a letter from Union health ministry offering help in tackling the disease in north Bengal. “The flow of reports from West Bengal on neonatal deaths and fatalities from acute Encephalitis syndrome prompted me to send a specialist team to the affected areas during this month,” read the letter of Union health minister Harsh Vardhan.
Dr B Satpathy, director of West Bengal health services said: “We have received 41 fresh cases since yesterday (Tuesday). The numbers are decreasing gradually and we are trying to bring the situation under control. Leaves of all health officials in north Bengal were cancelled. “
The hospitals in Jalpaiguri and Siliguri are flooded with cases of Encephalitis and patients were seen lying on the floor. Jalpaiguri district is the worst-hit owing to the large number of piggeries, where the virus thrives, found in the area. The municipalities were directed to crack down on the piggeries and maintain cleanliness in the area.
