With Nano ready to roll, TACO units turn to Singur

Pune July 08 Tata Johnson Controls Automotive, Tata Ficaso plan to shift units in time to meet November deadline From seating systems to mirrors and control cables, a whole range of auto components that go into the making of Nano, the low budget car from the Tata Motors stable, will shift production from Pune to Singur in West Bengal over the next couple of months. With the Nano all set to roll out later this year from its Singur plant, some of the companies of Tata Autocomp Systems Limited (TACO), one of the leading auto component groups in the country, made it clear that it will also soon be shifting at least some of its facilities to Singur. Tata Johnson Controls Automotive Limited, manufactures of seating systems and components is going dismantle one of the two manufacturing plants from Pune to Singur. "We will be making the seats for the Nano car and a manufacturing plant will be dismantled and moved to Singur soon. The plant will be able to make 150 tonnes or 700 car seats daily from this unit,' said Tata Johnson Controls Chief Executive Officer A K Belani. He added that even when the prices of raw materials have shot up, the company is confident of providing low-cost seats that provides high seating comfort. "It is one of the greatest challenges but we are fully confident of meeting the demand,' he said. Tata Johnson Controls is a 50:50 joint venture between Johnson Controls Inc. and TACO that has its units in Aurangabad, Noida, Rudrapur, Lucknow, Jamshedpur and Chennai. Tata Ficaso, another TACO group company, is also looking forward to start its unit in Singur in November this year. The company will be providing the Nano with internal and external mirrors and control cables. "A mirror with a light within it will be introduced for the first time in the country in Nano,' said Tata Ficaso Chief Executive Officer Sunil D Chaudhari. The initial investment for the plant in Singur is estimated at Rs 5 crore-6 crore. The company also has a unit in Jameshdpur, which along with the Pune unit will cater to the initial demands for the Nano. "Once the unit starts at Singur, we except it generate 3,000 components per day,' Chaudhari added. Meanwhile, the buzz in the TACO backyard in Pune is about being innovative. The TACO Interiors and Plastic Division, another company of the group, is pitching in with a replacement of sheet metal parts of Nano with plastic. "Compared to other vehicles, Nano will be coming out with much more plastic content,' said Interiors and Plastics Division Chief Executive Officer Manoj Kolhatkar. This division will be making around 40 parts for the Nano car including bumpers, instrument panels and trims. Tata Visteon Automotive Pvt Ltd, 50:50 joint venture between Taco Group and Visteon Corporation, will be concentrating on heat resistant plastic components, replacing aluminum parts for Nano. The company is providing automotive lighting solution to cars with full engineering support.
