Hindupur/Dharmavaram, July 6: Alleging that municipal officials and people's representatives had failed to solve the water problem, women staged protests in Hindupur and Dharma-varam on Sunday. In Hindupur, women sta-ged a rasta roko on the Hindupur-Anantpaur main road with empty pots. The CPI councillor, Ms Asiya Banu, and the town CPI general secretary, Mr Suresh Babu, extended their support to the protest. Traffic came to a halt as the women organised the stir from 9 am to 11.30 am. The protesters said that they had been facing problems as water was not supplied through municipal taps for the last 20 days. They said that in ward Nos. 33 and 34, water was not supplied to some areas. They alleged that municipal authorities had failed to solve the problem despite their lodging several complaints. Protesters grilled municipal vice-chairman Mr Abdullah Khan, who reached the spot. They also entered into a heated argument with municipal commissioner Mr Shyam Prasad. They called off the protest after the latter promised to solve the problem within a week. Women warned that they would intensify the protest if this was not done. In Dharmavaram, women of ward Nos. 17, 18, 19 and 27 staged a rasta roko at Kalajyothi Circle for drinking water. The municipal assistant engineer, Mr Ramana, said that they could not supply water in time due to the power cut. However, women alleged that municipal officials were supplying water only to some wards. They called off the stir after the municipal commissioner, Mr Ravindra Reddy and the municipal chairman, Mr Kalangi Harinath, promised to supply water in tankers.
