Environmental groups announced a global campaign to oppose the elimination of tariffs on wood products. The groups fear that new proposals to remove tariffs on lumber and wood products would increase consumption, leading to more rapid deforestation. The World Trade Organisation is expected to discuss the proposals as part of a trade liberalisation package developed by the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation.
