Work on three bridges across River Sal worth Rs 35 cr launched

Amidst much fanfare and bouquets, PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao on Thursday launched work on three bridges across River Sal costing over Rs 35 crore in his Navelim constituency, as he hopped from village to village along with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to lay the foundation stones for the mega projects. The highlight of the programme was the presence of more than half the State Cabinet, besides party MLAs, at a public function at Cavelossim to mark the day. Be it the Chief Minister, Home Minister Ravi Naik, Finance Minister Dayanand Narvekar, Water Resources Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Revenue Minister Jose Philip D'Souza, Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao, they all made their presence felt and lost no opportunity to shower praises on Alemao. The presence of the Ministers and MLAs on the dais prompted Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues to remark that the bridges would not only connect the coastal villages, but have helped to bridge the gaps prevailing amongst political lot. PWD Principal Chief Engineer, A M Wachasundar said it is perhaps the first time in Goa that foundation stones for three bridges are being laid at one time and promised to complete work on the bridges within two years time. He said the Cavelossim-Assolna bridge is the second longest in South Goa after the Zuari bridge. The other two bridges will connect Sinquetim-Varca and Telaulim to Benaulim. Work on the three bridges have already been tendered and the Principal Chief Engineer said the land acquisition process for the approach roads will commence soon. Complimenting Alemao for taking up the people-oriented work, Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat said the bridges will help the common man, adding that Churchill has kept his election promises of taking up the bridge work. Describing Churchill as a man with a conscience, Kamat said it was Churchill who saved his government when it was in a big crisis. Home Minister, Ravi Naik did not lag behind either in praising the Alemao's. He said that both Churchill and Joaquim were instrumental in the Congress returning to power in 2005 and for saving the Kamat Ministry last year. In his address, Finance Minister, Dayanand Narvekar said Alemao has undertaken many works during a span of just four months and said the presence of Churchill in the Congress has further strengthened the party. "Your precious vote for Churchill in the last elections helped him to bring in Rs 35 crore for the bridge work', he added. Water Resources Minister, Filipe Neri Rodrigues said Churchill has proved that he is a force to reckon with after he emerged triumphs despite all odds in the last hustings. NCP leader and Revenue Minister Jose Philip said the alliance can give a good government to the people if they remain united. "We are all one. Let us work for the betterment of the people', he said. In his address, Churchill took a dig at the former Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro for neglecting the constituency. "Navelim was never a No 1 constituency in terms of development. The former MLA only fooled the people', he added. Alemao said most of the issues taken up by him stands fulfilled and exuded confidence that the twin issues of Romi script and that of taxi operators would be resolved soon. Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao, Fr Nelson Colaco, Mike Mehta, Lazu Miranda also spoke. MLAs Reginaldo Lourenco and Babu Kawlekar were present.
