Workshop acquaints councillors on waste management

A half-day workshop on "Facilitating Door to Door Collection of Segregated Waste' was conducted at Hotel Woodlands, Margao on Thursday, to coincide with "World Environment Day' by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Western Regional Centre in Goa. The interactive workshop was designed to sensitize members of Margao Municipal Council to develop a strategy for door-to-door collection of segregated waste in Margao. The workshop was attended the councilors and the staff associated with waste management. The workshop began with a brief introduction by Saltanat Kazi. The importance of door-to-door collection (DTDC) of segregated waste was presented by Shabana Kazi, who emphasized that segregation of waste at source can contribute to converting waste into a resource. Yogita Mehra presented the economics of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) for Margao which highlighted that MSWM can be an economically viable option for Municipalities. Prajwala Pangam gave a legal overview based on Management and Handling Rules, 2000 highlighting the responsibilities of MMC. Saltanat Kazi presented an approximate requirement of manpower and estimate of cost to implement the DTDC strategy on a pilot scale in two localities of Margao. The strategies for the implementation of DTDC as well as to solicit the co-operation of people were discussed. The workshop is part of a larger project supported by Goa State Pollution Control Board with objectives of communicating information to the various stakeholder groups (waste generators and managers) regarding the importance of waste reduction and segregation at source and to motivate decision makers to adopt and implement an effective waste management policy.
