Workshop on Goas water woes

Scientists, environmentalists and experts will deliberate on Goa's water woes at a one-day workshop organised by the Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan at Old Goa on May 17 in the premises of Kunkolienkar Higher Secondary School. Titled Goa's water security: Present scenario and future challenges, the workshop will go into the present status of Mhadei and Virdi dam projects and rivers namely Terekhol, Chapora, Baga, Zuari, Sal, Talpona and others. It will also take up the subject of bio-diversity and water security in the Western ghats and so also status report on the State's lesser- known or minor rivers, states a press release issued here by MBA. The release states that it has been decided to have a deliberation on the State's strategy and people's action plan for ensuring water security and generating ideas for MBA's charter. Resource persons and representatives for the workshop include MBA vice president and scientist Dr Nandkumar Kamat, wildlife enthusiast Nirmal Kulkarni, activist Rajendra Kerkar, Prakash Paryekar, Dr Edwin D'Sa, Rajesh Kenkre, Ramdas Kelkar and Arun Naik. General Secretary Council for Social Justice and Peace Fr Maverick Fernandes will inaugurate the workshop and Secretary Peaceful Society Kalanand Mani will preside over the concluding function.
