The World Bank has approved a loan of $300 million to Tamil Nadu to take up projects for developing the urban infrastructure. The World Bank aid will be utilised to enhance the quality of urban infrastructure in the state. According to the World Bank, access roads in the greater metropolitan Chennai area will be widened, and over and under-passes built. In addition, road congestion will be addressed through improved traffic management. It was only in January this year that Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had asked World Bank India country director Michael F. Carter to help expeditiously process the clearance of the project and he had assured her that it will be done.
