Commenting on the release of the report "Our Forests...Our Future," Klaus Toepfer, World Commission member and executive director of UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme, said : "The strength of this report is that through the public hearings on five continents that the Commission has organized, it has given a voice to people who live in the forests, who make a living from the forests, and to every other groupb of people who have a stake in the future of the forests." The report states that from Siberia to Haiti, the world's forests are today exploited far beyond their ability to reproduce. Nearly 75 percent of West Africa's tropical forests have been lost since 1950.
