For tribals struggling for survival in the Narmada basin in Gujarat, the World Bank may have brought a new lease of life. The Asmal-Jain commission, set up by international agencies, will allow tribals to participate in an international debate on the efficacy and consequences of large dams. Along with several other large dam projects such as the Mohankham, Bhutbeda, Kadana, and Dharoi projects, the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) on the Narmada too will be the subject of popular debate.
