This spring's Arctic ozone hole may well be the worst ever, scientists warn. The severe loss of protective ozone in the upper atmosphere would increase the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching ground level, with possible damage to human health and the environment. The European Ozone Research Co-ordinating Unit in Cambridge says that current atmospheric conditions favour extensive ozone destruction when sunlight returns to the far north later this month.
