Parliament has tripped on good intentions once again - to immeasurable detriment to India's children and, by extension, the country's tomorrows. At first glance the unanimous amendment to the Constitution mankind education a fundamental right is unexceptionable. Yet, even a cursory persual of the legislation cleared by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday confirms the worst fear possible : that it is merely a fig leaf aimed at cloaking out of sight successive governments' incompetence and insincerity in delivering the most basic of facilities...editorial
