Yamuna banks will be developed into green zone

A vast stretch of land on either side of the Yamuna will be converted into a "forest" . Lt Governor Vijay Kapoor has asked the city's forest department to develop it into a "green zone". This department will plant about 40 lakh trees in an area of 3,500 hectares. This, say officials, would be a herculean task. But it is hoped this would, in the long term, not only add to the green cover but also help solve the perennial flooding problem. This puts paid to the Delhi Development Authority's plans to channelise the river and reclaim land for largescale development. As DDA vice-chairperson P K Ghosh says, the whole stretch, from Okhla to Wazirabad, will be developed into a green zone.
