The drive to remove slum clusters from the banks of the Yamuna gathered momentum as 510 tenements were removed from Yamuna Khadar in the Mayur Vihar area of East Delhi by the Irrigation Department of the Delhi Government. The jhuggi cluster, which had come up on the banks of the river between Mayur Vihar I and Samachar Apartments crossing, was removed amid a large police presence, which included deployment of one platoon drawn from Central Reserve Police and the Delhi police. The demolition work continued all through the day without any major protest. Almost resigned to the ground reality, the dwellers decided to pack up and leave for another place. Since this was a new jhuggi cluster, which had cropped up during the past couple of years, no alternate allotment was made to the dwellers. The area police said most of the demolition work had been completed by around 5 p.m. and there was no request for continuation of the drive on Thursday.
