Yangtze Floods

Three Gorges dam can not protect the region : Probe International issues a special report today dismissing the argument that the Three Gorges Project could have protected the Yangtze basin from disastrous floods. Published in the latest issue of the "Three Gorges Probe," the first bilingual (English and Chinese) Internet information news services about China's Three Gorges dam, the article argues that dams are not a silver bullet when it comes to managing floods. This year's devastating floods along the Yangtze River demonstrates a complete failure in the Chinese government strategy of flood control which concentrates on building dams rather then protecting the river and its tributaries from soil erosion, and bolstering the existing flood control capacity of the region.
