Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday warned that the government would not hesitate to invoke the PD Act to curb illegal sand mining and transportation in the wake of the new policy to supply sand free of cost for construction works in the State.
Intervening during question hour, he said that he was personally monitoring the new sand policy and there was not a paisa of corruption. He said that instructions have been issued to mount strict vigil at the borders by putting up check-posts to curb illegal transportation of sand.
If anybody was found to be illegally transporting sand, cases would be booked not only against the driver but the owner also. The vehicle would be seized and auctioned.
He said that 491 reaches with environmental clearance have been identified for excavation by public and there have been no complaints.
This was the first time in the country that such a sand policy had been announced and urged the people to not only rebel but give two slaps if somebody demanded money. Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy said that Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu had stated that a scam to the tune of Rs. 2,000 crore had taken place and sought to know why the State’s revenue did not grow.
Responding to Mr. Jagan, the Finance Minister clarified that he had only quoted newspaper reports that Rs. 2,000-crore loss had occurred to the State exchequer due to the sand mafia.
Replying to main question by Kakani Govardhana Reddy (YSRC), Minister for Mining Peethala Sujatha said that the Podalakur police (Nellore District) registered four cases relating to illegal transport of sand in 2014 and 2015 in which three persons were arrested and five tractors seized.
The tahsildar, Podakulur mandal also booked one case and referred it to the RDO, Nellore, who in turn imposed Rs.15,000 fine in this case. The RDO Nellore also trailed five cases ( eight tractors with 15 Cbm) and levied a penalty of Rs.80,000 on October 1, 2015.
