Rainfall decreased over two-thirds of India, says study Conventional thinking has it that India with global warming will receive more rainfall. But that need not necessarily be so. Annual rainfall, especially during winter and monsoon, has decreased in over 68 per cent of the country, claims a recent study by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (iitm), Pune. MONSOON WATCH Surinder Sud / New Delhi September 12, 2008, 3:16 IST Monsoon is yet to retreat even 11 days after the scheduled withdrawal date of September 1. But sowing for most kharif crops has been completed and farmers have shifted their focus to production and price trends of various crops. From this viewpoint, the emerging scenario of cotton, oilseeds, pulses and maize is fairly clear. For the rest, data on sowing is still awaited. However, weather conditions for the remaining part of the kharif season and the build-up of pests and diseases still need to be watched.
Climate models suggest that extreme precipitation events will become more common in an anthropogenically warmed climate. However, observational limitations have hindered a direct evaluation of model-projected changes in extreme precipitation.
Surinder Sud / Mumbai September 5, 2008, 3:13 IST The delay in the withdrawal of the monsoon is expected to benefit crops in the current kharif as well as in the ensuing rabi season. However, the projected increase in the intensity of rains in the north-eastern states may heighten the threat of floods in the Brahmaputra and other rivers, adversely affecting the standing crops. Rehabilitation of agriculture in the vast tracts ravaged by the Kosi river in Bihar is anticipated to take a long time as farm operations cannot begin for at least a month after the flood waters clear out.
This paper, discusses the development of a very high resolution (0.50 x 0.50 degree) daily rainfall data set for mesoscale meteorological studies over the Indian region. The data set was developed using quality controlled rainfall data from more than 6000 rain-gauge stations over India. The analysis consists of daily rainfall data for all the seasons for the period 1971-2005.
Sudheer Pal Singh / New Delhi August 25, 2008, 0:49 IST The country's energy deficit is likely to improve as hydro power stations are in a position to ramp up their generation capacity following healthy rainfall in the second fortnight of July, wiping out initial shortfall in rains. The cumulative storage position of the 81 major reservoirs in the country has more than doubled to 74.3 billion cubic metres (bcm) at the end of the second week of August, compared with 33.38 bcm a month earlier, according to the latest data available from the Ministry of Water Resources.
