Illegal and unscientific mining of coal has threatened the very existence of the famous stone bridge over Thlumuwi river, 15 km from Jowai This bridge on Jowai- Amlarem-Dawki road is close to the regulated area declared under the Ancient Monuments and Archeological sites and Remains (Amendment and validation) Act, 2010. The Thlu-muwi stone bridge, which was constructed 500 years ago by one of the Jaintia kings, may disappear if precautions are not taken by concerned authorities.

SHILLONG: To control the spread of malaria the State Government proposes to introduce larvivorous fishes popularly known as ‘mosquito fishes’ in a big way. Meghalaya continues to have high incidence of malaria especially in Garo Hills and parts of Khasi Jaintia Hills. “We will conduct a detailed study on the efficacy of larvivorous fishes to control the spread of malaria since these fish feed on mosquito larvae. If this option proves effective in controlling the spread of malaria then it would provide the Government with an alternative to control the disease,
KLEW: A serious irregularity has been unearthed over the implementation of the mid-day meal scheme in the Unitarian Lower Primary School in Upper Klew village in Ri-Bhoi district. Students of the school are not getting their mid-day meal even though official records claim that mid-day meals are being provided to the students on a regular basis.
Agartala: In a bid to manage the growing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), including thin plastic carry bags, leading Agartala based non-government research organisation ARPAN has planned to set up plasma gasification plant. Followed by a three-day seminar-cum-workshop and round table discussion on management of MSW and alternative use of plastic carry bags, ARPAN vice-president D Daschoudhury said here today that the agenda had been set for turning waste into wealth.
Guwahati: More than 10,000 people have been affected in the first wave of flood in Assam with almost all major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, maintaining a rising trend as the monsoon hit the state as well as adjoining areas. The first wave of flood had so far affected the five districts of North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Sonitpur and Hailakandi. Over 7,000 population had been affected in North Lakhimpur district, while 1500 families had been affected in Dhemaji district.
New Delhi: The Annual Plan for Meghalaya for 2012-13 was finalised at Rs 3939 crore here on Thursday at a meeting between Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and his Cabinet colleagues. This is an increase of Rs 1212 crore over the preceding year. Interestingly, the State itself had sought Rs 3535 crore for the year 2012-13 but the Planning Commission was magnanimous in sanctioning Rs 404 crore more than what was sought for after a marathon meeting at the Yojana Bhawan here that lasted about three hours.
New Delhi: Planning Commission on Wednesday finalised the annual plan for Manipur at Rs 3,500 crores for the year 2012-13. This was finalised at a meeting between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and State Chief Minister Ibobi Singh on Wednesday. In his comments on the performance of the State, Mr Ahluwalia said the State has been performing satisfactorily. He said the infrastructure gap in the State needs to be bridged on priority. The State should encourage private participation in infrastructure development
Shillong: The death of thousands of fish at Wah Lukha in Jaintia Hills and Ranikor river is directly linked mushrooming of cement plants and unscientific mining activities being carried out in the two districts of the state, says the KSU. “The rise in number of cement plants in Jaintia Hills has posed a great threat not only to the forests and environment but also the aquatic lives to the extend that all the rivers are poisoned making survival of aquatic lives almost impossible”, KSU Environment and Cultural Secretary J Marbaniang said.
JOWAI: In a bid to check unscientific limestone mining in War-Jaintia, the Dolloi, Nongtalang Elaka on Saturday constituted a coordination committee headed by the Dolloi, Chui Pohlynjar and representatives from other villages as members of the committee. The meeting was held at Unitarian Upper Primary School, Nongtalang and was attended by the Rangbah shnongs of five villages including New Nonglamin, Amsohmahalen, Shnong-Thmai and Nongtalang Mission besides the Tylli I Hun ka Nongtalang Organisation (TIHNO) and representatives of the War Jaintia Limestone- Boulder Stone Exporters Miners Association (WJLBEMA).
