PALAKKAD: The
KOCHI: Tribal people encroached the Devikulam divisional forest office premises on Saturday morning. A group of people, including women and children trespassed into the area. The police had stopped another attempt to encroach the forest land at Perinjamkutty on Friday. The tribal people, who were given land at Chinnakkanal as part of the rehabilitation scheme, encroached into the area, said the officials.The encroachment attempt was made alleging that the given land was not suitable for residential purposes due to disturbance from wild elephants.

The harvesting of organic paddy cultivated by the Vadakkencherry Padashekhara Samithi was performed here on Thursday. The Vadakkencherry Padashekhara Samithi consisting of 40 farmers had grown paddy in a 75 acre area. This was the second harvest festival being held here. Last year organic paddy cultivation was experimented in the paddy fields here with the co-operation of the Vadakkencherry grama panchayat and the Department of Agriculture.
PALAKKAD: The Government will initiate steps to declare the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary as the second tiger reserve in the State by the end of the current financial year, according to Forest Minister Benoy Viswom. The Minister was speaking after flagging off the four safari buses to the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary at a function held in Aanapady on Tuesday. He said that the first reserve was the Periyar sanctuary.

KOCHI: The All-Kerala River Protection Council has demanded the Constitution of River Protection Authority to save the rivers and water resources in the state where different lobbies were engaged in activities causing harm to most of the rivers. The council alleged that most of the rivers in the state were being misused by the agents of building industry, sand mafia and river encroachers.
