Over 100 pc rainfall in Thane: Agri college
WHILE the THANE municipal corporation is yet to complete the pre-monsoon repair and cleaning work, the news from an agricultural college that Thane may get over 100 per cent rainfall this year, would increase the woes of Thanekars. According to sources, a Pune-based agricultural college has carried out a study with regard to the forthcoming monsoons and has claimed that Thane will receive 102 per cent of rainfall this monsoon. According to the met department, normal rainfall is between five per cent and 100 per cent.

It ain't monsoon yet
After bearing the scorching heat for almost a week, the city dwellers got an opportunity to soak themselves as moderate to heavy showers lashed the city this evening, bringing with it much needed relief and hope of an early monsoon. But, the weather office was quick to point out that the showers were not even the pre-monsoon ones and it was the formation of a low pressure trough over Gangetic West Bengal that was responsible for the heavy rain. The weatherman also said that a cyclonic development in Jharkhand propelled the rain gods.

Pilots for the Weather-based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS) were implemented in selected areas in Karnataka state (70 hoblies). It was meant to be extended to other states, based on the success of the pilots. When the Budget 2008 came around, the FM ducked the question, refusing to be pinned down either on the WBCIS or the imperative amendments to the existing, and rather flawed, National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS), implemented since the Rabi 2000 season.

Flood preparedness
It is unfortunate that the Government of Assam has not yet been able to fully prepare itself to mitigate the sufferings of the people during floods and on most occasions, the concerned departments of the Government start the preparations to deal with the natural calamity only during the monsoon season. Last year, the State faced one of the worst ever floods, which affected all but one district of the State, but till now, most of the flood prone districts are not well equipped to deal with such a situation.

Monsoon misses Kerala date but it's not a worry'
Southwest monsoon missed its date with the Kerala coast on Thursday but a top weather scientist sought to play the incident down saying it was not a "sign of worry.' "True, the onset over Kerala has not happened,' Ajit Tyagi, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said here. The IMD had earlier forecast that the southwest monsoon will hit the Kerala coast on May 29, four days ahead of its normal June 1 onset.
