Road communication through the National Highway (NH) 31, which was overtopped by the floodwaters of the Puthimari at Kendukona yesterday, is expected to be restored by tomorrow morning. Crops on more than one lakh hectares of land in 15 districts have been inundated so far due to the flooding, which may take a turn for the worse in the next couple of days submerging fresh areas. According to a report prepared by the Department of Agricultural Extension on Monday, crops like transplanted aman, t-aman seedbeds, bona aman, aus, jute and vegetables on 1,06,869 hectares of land out of 9,91,841 hectares, brought under cultivation in the 15 flood-hit districts have been submerged.
The flood situation is continuing to deteriorate in northern and central parts of the country compelling thousands of people to take refuge in places like educational institutions and high roads. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said low-lying areas in 14 northern and central districts of the country could be inundated further in the next 48-72 hours as water levels of all rivers are increasing. Of the 73 places where river water level is monitored, 39 marked a rise while 29 marked a fall. The others remained unchanged.
