    BALASORE: Panic gripped Balasore after news of wide cracks in ward no. 1 of the town spread like wild fire on Wednesday. Thousands of people rushed to the spot to have a glimpse of numerous fissures that were visible in an area of over a km with a width of two to three feet. People residing in the area were alerted after these fissures led to rumours of an imminent earthquake. Sources said, due to the wide cracks in the land, house of one Baidyanath Sethi has been completely damaged while three houses of Baidhar Majhi, Raju Behera and Nabin Majhi have developed cracks.

    The Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) has established the first ever Disaster Risk Reduction Management Cell here on Friday. District Coordinator Officer (DCO) Israr Khan inaugurated the cell during a ceremony. Speaking on the occasion he appreciated establishment of the cell and said that after the October 8, 2005 earthquake, it was need of the hour to train people to cope with natural calamities. The DCO said that Mansehra was a high-risk district where floods and landsliding were common following the devastating earthquake.

    The United Nations yesterday launched a 33.5 million dollar appeal to aid relief efforts in southwest China where a magnitude-8.0 earthquake on May 12 left nearly 70,000 people dead. "It is the hope of the United Nations and the international community that China will quickly recover from this enormous tragedy," Khalid Malik, UN resident coordinator in China, said in a statement. The appeal will address the needs of the poor and vulnerable among the affected population, who are trying to rebuild after having survived the devastating earthquake, the statement said.

    An undersea earthquake measuring 6.3 points on the Richter scale struck the south-east Aegean island of Rhodes today, the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens said. The US Geological Survey said earlier the quake measured 6.4 at a depth of 68 kilometres and 147 kilometres south-west of Mugla, Turkey. The tremor was recorded at 6.26am (1326 AEST) with the epicentre located 445 kilometres south of the island. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The May 12 quake of magnitude 8, the deadliest disaster which struck the country in last three decades, has ravaged vast areas and flattened homes in Sichuan province and some other regions, leaving a gigantic task of rehabilitation. "The damage is so massive and many farmers have reversed into poverty again,' Fan Xiaojian, Director of the State Council and the cabinets leading group office of poverty-alleviation and development, said.

    Jakarta: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck at sea off Indonesia's Aceh province on Monday but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage, geologists said. The epicentre of the quake, which hit 30 km deep and struck at 11:44 am (0444 GMT), was 50 km southwest of the town of Sinabang, the main town on Simeulue island, in Aceh province. "The quake was felt only in Sinabang town, there's no report of damage so far," geophysicist Agung Mulyo Utomo said.
