    Pune, July 30: A mild tremor was experienced in Pune and parts of Maharashtra with its epicentre at Koyna dam region in Satara district, the Met office said on Wednesday morning. The tremor, felt past midnight at 12:40 am, lasted for around seven seconds and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. According to sources at Koyna, there was no damage to the dam where a power generation plant of the state electricity distribution company Mahavitaran is located.   • Los Angeles rattled by 5.4 magnitude quake

    A 5.4 magnitude earthquake rattled Los Angeles today, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. The quake struck at 11.42am (0442 AEST) and was centred near the town of Chino Hills, 50km east of Los Angeles at a depth of 12km, the United States Geological Survey said.   • Quake damage in city: Evacuation from vulnerable DU halls, DMCH buildings underway

    The midnight earthquake on Saturday caused cracks in walls and led to the collapse of roofs of many buildings in the capital. The ceilings of two buildings of fourth-class employees of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at Elephant Road collapsed and walls developed cracks at many residential halls of Dhaka University after being jolted by the moderate earthquake. Meanwhile, authorities have identified some vulnerable city buildings and asked the dwellers of those to vacate the dilapidated structures immediately.

    A powerful earthquake that sent boulders tumbling onto a national highway, injured more than 100 people across a wide swath of northern Japan, officials said on Thursday. The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, came just one month after a 7.2 magnitude temblor killed at least 12 people in Japan's northern mountains.

  • ICRC closes water supply programme in AJK

    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced closure of its water supply programme initiated by it in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in response to the October 2005 earthquake. According to a handout released here on Thursday, the agency had rehabilitated and reconstructed over 40 rural water supply systems, involving rehabilitation and installation of over 600 kilometres of pipeline, in Muzaffarabad district in cooperation with the communities concerned after the devastating earthquake.
