NALSA to move SC against sand mining

Assam’s flood, landslide toll rises to 124
Guwahati: The flood situation is improving in Assam but at least 13 districts are still under flood waters, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said Sunday. The death toll related to floods and landslides had gone up to 124 till Sunday. While 108 persons have died due to floods, the SDMA authorities have recorded 16 deaths due to landslides, the reports said. Another 17 persons remained missing in various districts across the state till Sunday, the SDMA said.

Toll 538 as floods play havoc with Kaziranga wildlife
Floating carcasses being recovered everyday Altogether 538 animals, including 13 rhinos, of the Kaziranga National Park, have been killed in the devastating Assam floods and the death toll is mounting with the KNP authorities of this World Heritage Site recovering more floating carcasses everyday. The floods have also damaged roads and other infrastructure in the park, which is famous for the one-horned rhino. Even amidst the floods, two rhinos were killed by poachers. The floods have claimed 100 human lives, while 16 others died due to landslip in the State. Of these, 56 are children.

Assam floods: Toll reaches 100, 16 missing
Guwahati: The death toll in the Assam floods Thursday rose to 100 even as the waters started to recede in most of the 27 affected districts except Dhemaji. However, the rising water level of the Jiadhal river submerged several villages in the morning. The surging waters have also affected parts of National Highway 52 in the district. An estimated population of 22 lakh have been affected in the worst ever flood in recent years causing large-scale devastation in 2809 villages in 27 of the 28 districts of the state.

Assam needs Rs 2,500 Cr to restore infrastructure damaged by floods
As per preliminary assessment done by state government agencies, Assam would need around Rs 2,500 crore “as immediate fund requirement” for restoration of infrastructure damaged by floods. This year’s flood has been the worst in Assam since 2004 and caused severe damage to state’s infrastructure and agricultural crop. Government sources informed that as per the preliminary assessment, over 2,667 roads have been affected, including damage to bridges and culvers by the floods. Several national highways were submerged and developed potholes or were affected by landslides.
