In the extreme north-eastern end of Mumbai limits, mangroves close to the vast expanse of slums in Mankhurd’s Cheetah Camp area are being destroyed at an alarming rate even as repeated complaints by residents have fallen on deaf ears. Nearly 400 new shanties have been built illegally by reclaiming mudflats and cutting mangroves spread over an area of at least 55 acres in the past two years. Residents believe that ‘slumlords’ are able to do this with the connivance of the local police and BMC officials while the forest department and the collector’s office turn a blind eye.
The Rajasthan Government will shortly launch a pilot project under the Rajiv Awas Yojana at a cost of Rs.400 crore for providing housing facility to about 12,000 people living in Sanjay Nagar slum colony here. The project forms part of the drive for providing better infrastructure and amenities to the urban poor. State Principal Urban Development Secretary G. S. Sandhu said at a consultation on urban poverty here that the pilot project would pave the way for full-fledged implementation of the Union Government's ambitious housing scheme. The State Government intends to give land title to slum dwellers and would bring an Act for this purpose, said Mr. Sandhu.
