Land acquisition for city’s key projects likely to see end soon
Land acquisition for the Puzhuthivakkam MRTS station has reached the final stages with an “award passed for acquisition of 8,462 sq. m. of land.” The information was shared with officials of the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (Cumta), the Chennai Corporation and other agencies at a meeting organised at the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Wednesday. With Cumta stressing the need for a well chalked-out strategy to speed up traffic and transportation projects, the CMDA is planning to take measures to cope with legal proceedings and quicken land acquisition.

Pune metro project gets Rs 10 crore
PUNE: The much-delayed Pune metro rail project got a funding of Rs 10.01 crore in the Union Budget on Thursday. The Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations, that have proposed the project in association with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, have already made provisions in their respective budgets for the year 2013-14. The budgetary head, 'Pune Metro', figures in the list of projects of the urban development department for the first time this year in budget. The total funding of Rs 10.01 crore has been bifurcated into three components.

Coal mine connectivity back on track, gets Rs 4,000-cr push
The coal ministry feels that the railway ministry has taken a view of expediting the process of laying tracks to connect coal mines since it has been for the first time that a railway minister has mentioned such a project in his budget speech. Plans for coal mine connectivity projects were conceived a decade ago but the railways never took it as priority. “The railway ministry has shown its seriousness about the need to evacuate additional coal and for this the plan to invest in coal mine-linking projects is important,” Sriprakash Jaiswal, coal minister told Fe.

Iron ore exports likely to fall further in FY14
Exports of iron ore are likely to fall further during the next financial year (2013-14) and touch a record low, as Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal ignored the demand for a level field in the freight rates charged on movement of iron ore for domestic use and exports. There is already an export cess of 30 per cent on iron ore as a dampener. In 2008-09, iron ore exports were at a record 110 million tonnes (mt), which have fallen to just 15 mt in the current financial year till November. The industry estimates that since government policies remain non-conducive, exports next year could be in single digit, maybe a few million tonnes.

Mining industry faces Rs 250cr loss
KEONJHAR: The government and mining companies were feared to face a loss of over Rs 250 crore on the first day of the nationwide bandh in the district as mineral transportation by rail and road came to a halt on Wednesday. "There was no mining activity here today and the loss is tremendous," said deputy director of mines Ballav Ch Nayak. While no trains plied in the district, supporters and leaders of various trade unions blocked National Highway-215 (Rajamunda-Panikoili) and NH-6 (Mumbai-Kolkata) at different places, affecting transportation of minerals.
