Around Rs.50,300 was collected as fine from defaulters for dumping garbage in public places in the city in the last one week, a statement released by city Corporation has said. Apart from this, around 71 hotels in the city were issued notice to improve their food safety and hygiene conditions in lightening inspections conducted by the health squads of the Corporation.
Meetings and awareness programmes planned Town panchayats in and around Vaniyambadi might soon get rid of plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. The panchayats have set in motion the process to ban use of plastic in a phased manner and have been garnering support for their initiative from shop keepers, students and public through meetings and awareness programmes.
In a major move, the Directorate of Town Panchayats has embarked upon a plastic eradication plan to declare all 529 town panchayats in the State plastic-free by September 15. In a circular sent to Assistant Directors of Town Panchayats in the State, M. Chandrasekaran, Director of Town Panchayats, has detailed given an action plan to eradicate plastic in the town panchayats.
District Judge K. P. Jyothindranath who inspected Lalur, the Thrissur Corporation’s waste disposal site, recently has submitted his report to the High Court. He inspected Lalur under a directive of the High Court that the district judge should review waste treatment in the site every six months. The report suggested that decentralised waste treatment plants should be set up at the earliest. “The processing units for plastic materials and bio-degradable wastes should be established in a large scale. Waste management systems for residents, apartments, hotels, markets and educational institutions should be promoted,” the report said.

The annual budget for 2012-13 was also passed and approved at the gram sabha, which was convened at the panchayat complex ground. Deputy Sarpanch Nunes informed that the panchayat was conducting plastic drives regularly besides the door-to-door collection of garbage. He said the panchayat is working on the garbage sorting out station.
Discussions on to set up pyrolysis plant The Corporation, still in the dark about how to dispose of the organic waste generated in the city with the Vilappilsala plant remaining closed, has some hope on the plastic waste disposal front. The civic body has arrived at an understanding with the Bangalore-based Green Transit Renewable Energies, which has come forward with an offer to collect and process plastic waste from the city.
