Fire that broke out at the compost yard of the municipality at Sekkadi Jebamalaipuram near Srinivasapuram here on Sunday night brings into focus the need for improving solid waste management in the town. Every day, about 110 tonnes of garbage are dumped at the compost yard. But they are not segregated into biodegradable and non-degradable waste. This has to be addressed as segregation will improve waste management.

It has now decided to make the entire Bandipur Tiger Reserve a plastic-free zone by imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 on offenders from August 15, 2012. AHMEDABAD: Sale of gutka and pan masala is rampant in plastic sachets, even though the Supreme Court has levied a ban on them since March 1last year. Strings of pan masala and gutka sachets of numerous brands continue to hand in shops across the city, even as shopkeepers feign ignorance. "Who said there is a ban," says Ram Vaghasiya, who runs a pan shop in Shivranjani. There were tobacco products and pan masalas of more than 20 popular brands in his shop. Bhadresh, another shopkeeper in the area, said the supplies continue to be packaged in plastic sachets.

93 per cent flats in city lack waste management system The Corporation of Thrissur has given an ultimatum to the 200-odd flats in the city to have their own waste management system soon. By June-end, apartment complexes in the city will have to choose a suitable waste treatment system to process garbage at the source level. As the dumping of garbage at Lalur dumpyard has been hit for more than five months, the Corporation has decided to make independent source-level garbage treatment facilities mandatory for apartment complexes, hotels and marriage halls.
