China said Wednesday that it had broken up a child labor ring that provided children from poor, inland areas with work in booming coastal cities, acknowledging that severe labor abuses extended into the heart of its export economy.
With 30 crore poor people in India, the number of poor has barely changed over the last three decades. According to 11th Five year Plan, total number of poor people counted 32.13 crore in 1973, 32.29 crore in 1983, 32.03 crore in 1993-94 and 30.17 crore in 2004-05. This means the number of poor in the country has declined between 1993-94 and 2004-05 by roughly two crore. Even after sixty years of independence, over a quarter of our population still remains poor. However, the country has successfully reduced the share of the poor in the population from 54.8 in 1973 to 27.5 in 2004.
At least 30 people were injured and 200 houses damaged as a tornado lashed 12 villages in two upazilas in Lalmonirhat Monday night. Several hundred trees were also blown over at Adimari and in the district headquarters. Villagers said the tornado started sweeping the villages at about 9:30pm. Many of the injured were admitted to Aditmari Health Complex and Lalmonirhat General Hospital.

Villagers in Orissa state, fearing they will lose their land without adequate compensation, forced officials to suspend construction work late on Sunday in Dhamra, where India is planning to build one of its biggest ports. The proposed port on the eastern coast will handle 83 million tonnes of cargo per year, said Santosh Mohapatra, chief executive of Dhamra Port Company Ltd.
A wildfire that began along a popular hiking trail forced 1,000 people to evacuate their homes in the hills northeast of Los Angeles on Sunday, officials said.
