  • NHRC lauds govt's concern on child labour

    A member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao, has appreciated the Haryana Government's concern to eradicate child labour and its consideration to provide employment opportunities to the families, whose children are engaged as labour. Justice Rao was addressing a workshop on bonded labour and child labour organised by the NHRC in collaboration with the Haryana Labour Department here today.

    The October 8, 2005 earthquake wrecked havoc on life and property in the bordering area of Karnah. Three years after the natural disaster hit Karnah villages, at least 99 children rendered orphans are still awaiting cash relief compensation announced by the union government under National Calamity Scheme for Victims (NCSV) scheme. To rehabilitate the victimised children and enable them to continue with their education, the union government under the scheme had announced a cash relief of Rs five lakh each in favour of the children whose parents died in the quake and

  • National Tribal University at Amarkantak

    Indira Gandhi National Tribal University is being established at Amarkantak. The state government has provided 21 acre land for this university. Foundation stone of the university would be laid by Human Resources Minister Arjun Singh on April 19. Those who would be specially present on the occasion include Commercial Tax Minister Babulal Gaur, Tribal Welfare Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha, Ms Jamuna Devi and MP Dalpat Singh Paraste.     A state cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh on Thursday decided to give compensation under liberal rehabilitation policy to the farmers of Dhar and Jhabua who have been affected by the construction of Mahi Project. The cabinet has given approval to the proposal that those farmers, whose more then 75 percent land has come under submergence would be provided compensation and rehabilitation grant for their land under submergence as well houses which do not fall in the area of submergence.

    Millions of displaced Baloch and Pushtoon people are living like refugees in worst condition due to the ongoing military operation in various parts of Balochistan and Waziristan while about 17,000 Kashmiris are still in refugee camps at the Pakistani side of the LoC, said a study report prepared by different NGOs. According to the report, the number of displaced people in Pakistan has increased during the year 2007 and they are still living in a refugee-like condition in their own country.

  • Number of HIV/AIDS patients stable

    A latest study conducted by the National Center for AIDS and STD Control has shown that the estimated number of HIV/AIDS patients has been stable in the past two years. The study conducted in 2007 by using latest available tools and methodologies has estimated their number at 69,790 - similar to the 70,352 numbers estimated by a study conducted in 2005. Of the total estimated 69,790; 64,585 consist of adults between the age 15 and 49 years (with 16,387 of them women). Likewise, 1857 were children below 14 years of age an 3348 were adults above 50 years of age.

    The use of antibiotics and other anti-microbial agents throughout the food chain contributes to the growth of resistant bacteria that can be passed on to humans through food, EU's food agency said on Thursday. The resistance of bacteria has become a growing concern as anti-microbials become less effective in fighting infections, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said in a statement.

    Over the two years since it became operational, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) of 2005 has had a positive impact on the lives of millions of people across the poorest districts in the country. The Act, which guarantees 100 days of employment per household at minimum wage, is the first piece of legislation that compels the state to provide a social safety net for impoverished rural households. Till March 31, 2008, the Scheme had covered 330 districts across different States. From April 1, 2008, it has covered the entire country.
