The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the clean coal technologies (CCT) used in power generation worldwide and draw preliminary recommendations regarding the utilization of CCT options which are suitable for application in India.
"IF THE best way to create the future is to invent it, we say the second-best way is to finance it." John Doerr is only half joking. He is one of the most influential venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, and he knows a thing or two about financing the future. But ask him what he's focused on now and you won't hear venture-capital buzz-phrases such as "Web 2.0". These days, Doerr is firmly focused on clean technology - and in particular, energy technologies that can save the planet from global warming.
Make clean fuel or feed the world? That's the dilemma facing biofuel producers now that the world food crisis is making the turning of food crops into biofuel seem increasingly irresponsible. But maybe there's a way out. Mariam Sticklen of Michigan State University in East Lansing and colleagues have engineered a fuel plant to make its own cellulases - a bit like oil that refines itself into petroleum.
While green campaigners push for ever more wind turbines, a new wave of environmentally motivated engineers is already considering turbines to be a little old-school. One of the pioneers of the concept of a kite as a renewable energy source is Peter Lynn, a New Zealand kite designer.
Plants should source equipment, services from the US. Export-Import Bank of the United States (EX-IM Bank) is open to funding Indian nuclear power projects that will source equipment and services from the US. If a US company is involved in providing equipment and services for nuclear power project in India, the Ex-Im Bank could look at such a proposal, Chairman and President James Lambright said on Tuesday. The mandate of the US government-owned Ex-Im is to promote exports.
Close on the heels of quality issues related to some of the wind turbine blades supplied in the US and other parts of the world, Suzlon Energy - the fifth largest wind power equipment manufacturer in the world - is facing more problems in the US. Suzlon Rotor Corporation, its US subsidiary which manufactures wind turbine blades and nose cones at Pipestone, Minnesota, has been fined by the local Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for allegedly violating air pollution control norms.
Chandigarh In the agrarian states of Punjab and Haryana, power cuts have been the order of the day for years. This, in turn, has affected economic development in these states. While the two states have decided to spend almost one-third of their five-year Plan for 2007-12 on power projects, they have also realised that the immediate need was to save energy. With that in mind, Punjab has tied up with a US major, Econoler International, to light the streets of municipal areas of the state.
A City-based engineer Prabhakar Wawge, has come up with a solar water heating system, which can be used in multistoried building without using terrace area. It can be used as a wall integrated solar water heating system and does not require any pumping mechanism for circulation. Wawge got the patent for his invention recently. He claims that in comparison with normal solar system his invention reduces the cost of solar water heating system by Rs 3000 to Rs 3500.
A hybrid plant combines wind, solar and hybrid power conditioning unit with a battery to supply electricity to remote areas.
Fuel cells are an important enabling technology for the hydrogen economy and have the potential to revolutionize the way we power our nation, offering cleaner, more-efficient alternatives to the combu
