IF you want to have round-the-clock electricity, then you may install domestic wind turbines in your household. Coimbatore-based International Consultant and Management Services (ICMS) will provide the technology for installation of ICMS-UE series domestic wind turbines. The turbines will convert wind energy into electrical power for domestic use. "The machine comes under four different models namely 600 watt, 1500, 3300 and 4200 watt, all useful for Indian standard house utensils and costs between Rs 80,000 and Rs 3 lakh,'' said R C Ravi, director of ICMS.
Ten years ago, running your car on biofuels meant covertly topping up your tank with chip fat. Now petrol is routinely mixed with ethanol made from corn, and diesel with squeezed rape, oil palm and soya. The current generation of biofuels was rushed onto the market in response to escalating concern in Europe about climate change, and in the US about energy security. But almost before the biofuels industry has got going, it has run into major problems. It has swiftly become a victim of its own success, gobbling up land and water in a way that has frightened the world.
While the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change is giving final touches to the draft policy on climate change, innovators at the grassroots are coming up with solutions to tap into renewable energy resources and designing energy efficient devices.
Anupama Airy Country's top corporate houses including the Tatas, Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Group, the Jindals along with the Adani Group and others will now have to compete and outbid each other to secure rights for a cluster of coal blocks
The good news in the International Energy Agency's report on the future of energy technologies is that there is enough oil left on the planet to allow a huge increase in consumption over the next few decades. The bad news is that the consequences for the climate of burning that much oil would be alarming. The IEA, the rich countries' energy watchdog, is urging the world to start weaning itself off oil, not because supplies are running out but to avoid "significant change in all aspects of life and irreversible change in the natural environment" as a result of global warming.
Energy: Enthusiasm for renewable energy means wind turbines and solar panels are popping up all over the place. But what happened to wave power? Finavera
This is one biofuel that lives up to its green billing in more ways than one. It's an emerald-green crude oil, produced by photosynthesis in algae, which could fuel cars, trucks and aircraft - without consuming crops that can be used as food.
With oil prices at historic highs, China is moving full steam ahead with a controversial process to turn its vast coal reserves into barrels of oil. Known as coal-to-liquid (CTL), the process is reviled by environmentalists who say it causes excessive greenhouse gases. Yet the possibility of obtaining oil.-from coal and being fuel self-sufficient is enticing to coal-rich coun-tries seeking to secure their ; energy supply in an age of increased debate about how long the world's oil reserves can continue to meet demand.
Suzlon Energy, the world's fifth-biggest wind turbine maker, is among six others who have signed an agreement with the US government to help the world's biggest economy generate 20 per cent of its electricty using wind power by 2030. The pact may aid the Pune-based company win more orders for power equipment and improve manufacturing technology.
Storing energy from wind is an enormous challenge. Given the intermittent nature of wind, if wind power can be harnessed and stored during wind periods in on site batteries, it can ensure a constant supply to the power grid. This in turn will help to improve the penetration of the grid by wind energy.
