  • It's Pinching Everyone

Here's what the government must do to tackle inflation Bhaskar Dutta Warwick: I wrote in this column a couple of months ago that the rate of inflation had just crossed 7 per cent, and went on to add that this was the highest price rise witnessed in the previous 40 months. There was an air of acute despair amongst top Congress leaders since no easy options seemed to be available to the government to control the surge in prices of a wide range of commodities, including most unfortunately staple food items.

  • Security fears over food and fuel crisis

Carola Hoyos & Javier Blas Western countries have upgraded the food and fuel crisis into a national security concern as they fear record high energy and agriculture commodity costs are destabilising key developing regions of the world. The concerns come as the world suffers for the first time since 1973 from the confluence of record oil and food prices. Corn, soyabean and meat prices jumped this week to all-time highs, while oil prices hit a record of almost $140 a barrel.

  • Paddy price puzzle

Last week the government, in an ad hoc decision, raised the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy from Rs.745 to Rs.850 per quintal for most common varieties. On the face of it, a 14 per cent hike might seem good enough, neither disheartening the farmers nor hurting the consumers. However, for a variety of reasons, the decision has drawn flak. The Commission of Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP) has recommended an MSP of Rs.1,000.

  • Food shortages curb global appetite for free trade

Free-trade policies long advanced by World Bank President Robert Zoellick and US President George W. Bush are losing favour as countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America find they can't buy enough food to feed their people. Global food prices have spiked 60% since the beginning of 2007, sparking riots in more than 30 countries that depend on imported food, including Cameroon and Egypt. The surge in prices threatens to push the number of malnourished people in the world from 860 million to almost 1 billion, according to the World Food Programme in Rome.
