Gangtok: A rhino horn, valued at about Rs 20 lakh, was recovered from three persons at Siliguri in West Bengal, forest department sources said on Tuesday. Police arrested the trio from Siliguri on June 27 after they showed the rhino horn to the cops, who posed as buyers and agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh for the same, the sources said.
Four poachers were killed in a gunfight with wildlife rangers at the famed Kaziranga National Park in Assam today, three days after seven poachers were arrested on the fringe of the sanctuary, officials said. A wildlife warden said a group of six poachers entered the park early today and fired at an adult rhino near the Mihimukh range, although they failed to hit the target.
In a major break through on Tuesday the wildlife rangers arrested seven poachers, including two former forest guards and recovered a rhino horn near Kaziranga National Park a Unesco recognised world heritage centre of Assam. The poachers were arrested on Tuesday when they were in the process of selling a rhino horn to an international animal organ smuggling syndicate.

<p>Almost after a century of experimenting, Kaziranga National Park is now a well-known example of the success of wildlife conservation. Conservationists have no hesitation in ascribing the success of this story to the careful application of the science of wildlife conservation. A large section of the Assamese middle class would like to associate the institution as organic to their success story.
Facts not available in the public domain have revealed significant information about rhino slaughter in and around Kaziranga National Park, where 13 of the highly protected species met gruesome end last year alone.
