SHILLONG: In a bid to pave the way for food and nutritional security in the region through improved varieties of popular tuber crops, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Research Complex for NEH Region, today held a workshop at the complex in Umiam, Ri-Bhoi District. The workshop which will last for two days is aptly entitled CTCRI-ICAR-NEH planning-cum inception workshop on enhancing and sustainable livelihood in NEH Region through tuber crops technology.
In a bid to declare the district malnutrition-free within six months, efforts will be made to screen, identify and treat malnourished children. Assistance will be taken of the Central Food Technological Research Institute to formulate nutrition component in ready-to-eat food, which will be supplied to children. Announcing this here on Sunday, Minister for Medical Education and district in-charge S.A. Ramdas said that children in both Mysore Urban and Rural would be covered in programme. The screening process would be completed by the first week of August. He said the programme would be launched in conjunction with the Department of Women and Child Development, and the district would be free of malnutrition within six months.

The State government has begun the process of identification of malnourished children below the age of six and not enrolled in the anganwadi centres, on the direction of the High Court. The first health camp for such children is scheduled for July 15.
