The progress made so far in some key projects of the government as well as its flagship schemes like Bharat Nirman and Nrega came in for scrutiny at a meeting in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) chaired by T.K.A. Nair, principal secretary to the PM on Tuesday.
Bharat Nirman, a programme to build rural infrastructure, was launched by the Government of India in 2005. Phase I of the programme was implemented in the period 2005-06 to 2008-09. Phase II is being implemented from 2009-10 to 2011-12. Rural drinking water is one of the six components of Bharat Nirman.
Panchayats at different levels play an important role in the implementation of rural development schemes. Under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Panchayats are the principal implementing agencies. However, most of the panchayats do not have proper place to efficiently discharge their duties and responsibilities.
R. Rajaram TIRUCHI: Forest Department has embarked on the task of improving roads within Reserve Forests (RF) across the State with a view to providing linkages among remote villages on the fringes. The project also includes works on strengthening connectivity of roads running through the RFs in order to make them motorable.
With a view to disseminate information to create mass awareness and to highlight various schemes and programmes of the Central Government, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in association with the Darrang district administration will be organising a public information campaign under Bharat Nirman at Darrang district from January 20 to 23, a press release said.
