State wants Centre to foot 90% of food security bill
Even before it is put into execution, UPA-II’s big-ticket scheme, the Food Security Bill, seems to be facing hurdles from within. The Congress-led government in Maharashtra has told the Centre that it is already facing a severe financial crunch and is capable of footing only 10% of the Rs-600 crore annual cost that is needed for transportation, storage and distribution of grains to implement the food security programme in the state.

The Act as been enacted in Haryana, Himachal, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, Mizoram and Delhi The Centre will review preparations for implementation of the National Food security Act with the States and UTs in a meeting here on Tuesday. The Act which got accent of President Pranab Mukherjee on September, 12 after Parliament's nod, has been enacted in Haryana, Himachal, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, Mizoram and Delhi. The historic Act will ensure heavily subsidized foodgrains to about 82 crore people as their legal right.

Foot-and-mouth disease toll jumps to 730
The deadly foot-and-mouth disease, which claimed over 700 cattle this year in the state, is becoming a major cause of worry. The toll shot up from 456 last week to 730, more than the total number of deaths reported in the past seven years. Low subscription of the available vaccination could well be the reason for the outbreak.

Take GM route to meet higher grain needs, says Pawar
Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on Tuesday that the country should adopt genetically modified (GM) crops in order meet the higher foodgrain requirement under the landmark food security law. "We have to accelerate the pace of agricultural growth on a sustainable basis to meet the additional requirement of foodgrain for proper implementation of the food security Act," Pawar said as he addressed a national rabi conference.
