<p> New Delhi There could be few takers among states for the food ministry’s proposal to allocate grain to below poverty lines (BPL) families at prices lower than the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) rates.</p>
<p> To improve offtake of foodgrain allocated to states under the targeted public distribution system (PDS) and other schemes, the food ministry has mooted a proposal to sell wheat and rice to below poverty line (BPL) families at Rs 2 and Rs 3 per kilogram, respectively.</p>
<p> As per the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture here on Friday, the area under rice cultivation is 260.36 lakh hectares against 244.79 lakh hectares sown this time last year. Sown area has increased in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam. However, it is lower in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, Haryana and Punjabdue to insufficient rain.</p>
