New Delhi Telecom firms will make annual energy savings of as much as R10,000 crore over the next eight years if they adopt the Centre’s green telecom directive and phase out diesel consumption by 2020, a report released by an international NGO said on Tuesday. A cruel joke has been played out at the expense of the Bhopal victims of the world’s worst industrial disaster. The Supreme Court had ordered the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to file a report on the status of the ground water contamination at the Union Carbide plant site in Bhopal by June 4, 2012. The CPCB has treated this entire exercise in a rather lackadaisical fashion and from the six samples tested by them, five were taken from the drinking water supply of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation. They have also criticised its recommendation for a ban on the field trials of such crops, terming the report as “unscientific and partisan”. The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) had approved commercial cultivation of Bt brinjal in 2009, but the then environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, had put an indefinite moratorium on the decision following protests.
Environmentalists have called for stopping all field trials of genetically (GM) modified crops and a wider public debate on the issue. They welcomed the 492-page report of the Parliamentary Standing
Bhubaneshwar So many threats... and so much money to be made – the trade off is tragically tilted against the Indian tigers. Coal mining for electricity generation is the biggest threat to India's tigers, a report by environmental activists Greenpeace warned, demanding a moratorium on clearances for new mines just days after massive blackouts highlighted power shortages. A hot-button issue in India, tiger conservation pits the need to preserve wildlife against the development needs of a country that witnessed the slowest economic growth in nine years in March and where hundreds of millions continue to live below poverty line.
