Erosion by the river Brahmaputra has taken a serious turn at Ratanpur and Singria villages under Fulchari Upazila in the district recently. Vast tracts of cropland and the homesteads of the villagers have been devoured by the erosion of the river causing at least 30 families of the villagers to become homeless, sources said.
Several hundreds people are still suffering from arsenicosis in different areas of Jhenaidah. Even various types of awareness programmes could not eradicate the menace from the district. Use of arsenic contaminated water and inadequate awareness campaign are mainly responsible for the situation, said some of the affected people.
Hundreds of people in Sirajganj Sadar upazila yesterday held a rally at the Independence Square in Bazaar Station intersection demanding rehabilitation of the Jamuna erosion victims. They also demanded building of a permanent dam from Ranigram Hard Point to Jamuna Bridge to protect Sirajganj from the gorge of the river. Sirajganj Pourasabha ward councilor Nazrul Islam was in the chair.

A minor girl died and about 60 people fell sick Saturday night after they had reportedly drunk contaminated supply water at Sabak Colony of Jamal Khan in Chittagong.
