  • 570 hectares of cropland damaged by floodwaters in Kishoreganj

    Flash flood, caused by the incessant rains over the last week, and onrush of waters from across the border, submerged the vast areas in haor areas of the district leaving an unspecified number of people maroored by the deluge. The flood affected are Karimganj, Katiadi, Nikli, Hossainpur, Kuliarchar, Bajitpur, Itna, Tarail, Austagram, Pukundi and port town Bhairab Bazar.

  • Diarrhoea breaks out in Netrakona

    Diarrhoea has broken out in all the six upazilas of Netrakona with the recession of flood water. At least 650 people, mainly old men and children, have been attacked with the waterborne disease in the last one week, according to sources at the district civil surgeon

  • Extensive damage to standing crops caused by floodwater

    Various crops including transplanted aman on nearly 1.34 lakh hectares and some 6.90 lakh small and marginal farmers in twenty-four districts have been badly affected due to flood throughout the country. A detailed report prepared by the Department of Agricultural Extension on Monday showed that the standing crops of 1,33,864 hectares out of the total inundated farmland of 1,93,337 hectares have already been damaged. About 6,89,898 small and marginal farmers in these districts have also been affected because their crops have been damaged by the onslaught of flood.

  • 100-day job scheme starts for 20 lakh poor

    The government yesterday launched a 100-day employment generation scheme for 20 lakh hardcore poor across the country to mitigate their sufferings during lean season. Under the programme, one person of a family will get Tk 100 per working day against his/her labour to be utilised in different types of projects like canal digging, embankment building, earth filling, pond cleaning and compost making. The total number of people brought under the programme worth Tk 2,000 crore is about 5 percent of the total number of extreme poor at over 4 crore.

  • Cases filed against 11 vehicles

    The Department of Environment (DoE) filed cases against 11 vehicles, including bus, mini-bus and cab, in the city yesterday for causing noise pollution. The cases were filed under Motor Vehicle Ordinance-1983 during a drive at Old Airport Road on the second day of the DoE's four-day awareness campaign against noise pollution. A team led by DoE Deputy Director (implementation) Billal Hossain conducted the drive. BRTA representatives and policemen were on the team. The team also seized two hydraulic horns and distributed leaflets.

  • Food crisis grips Sidr-hit Southkhali

    Worst hit by the Sidr on November 15 last year, Southkhali union under Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat district now sees severe food crisis and many people are reportedly suffering from various diseases resulting from starvation and semi-starvation. Lack of employment opportunity coupled with absence of relief for the Sidr-hit people during the last three months has worsened the situation, locals said.

  • 15 deer in Jamuna Eco Park die of heart attack!

    Three more deer in Jamuna Eco Park in Sirajganj died on Saturday due to alleged carelessness of park authorities. With these the casualty figure rose to 15 so far, official sources said. Seven deer were released in the park during its inauguration on March 9 this year as part of a beautification programme. Next day, seven more deer were released. After a few days, 12 deer out of the 14 went missing. The Park authorities claimed that some of the deer died from different diseases, while others killed or driven out by foxes and dogs.

  • Diarrhoea situation remains unchanged in city

    The diarrhoea situation in the capital remains unchanged and shows no sign of improving soon. A huge number of low-income group people have been thronging at the Dhaka Hospital of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) every day. The hospital experienced some 510 diarrhoea patients till 8.00pm from 1.00am yesterday, which were 539 the day before yesterday.
