  • Faridpur town at risk of river erosion

    The Faridpur town is under threat of erosion by the River Padma as the authorities concerned could not complete construction of the river protection dam before the current monsoon. The river is advancing fast, and it is now only 250 metres away from the district town, creating panic among the residences in the town and adjacent areas. In the last few days, several points of the newly built five-kilometre embankment in Vajondanga area under Alibad union of sadar upazila has been eroded by the river, sources at the Water Development Board, Faridpur said.

  • HC rules on Ganges water treaty

    The High Court on Thursday asked the government to explain in four weeks why it would not be directed to review the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty and take steps to ensure due share of waters. The bench of Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice M Rezaul Haque gave the ruling after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyers MK Muraduzzaman and Faruk Hossain on June 8.

  • Proposal to start projects to meet city housing needs

    Nagar Unnayan Committee (NUC) of the housing and public works ministry at a seminar yesterday proposed to start housing projects in the city to meet the housing needs especially for the poor, low income and middle income groups in a planned manner. Prof Nazrul Islam of the NUC presented a study paper titled 'A proposal for a housing development programme in Dhaka city' along with architect Salma A Shafi at the seminar at the auditorium of the Department of Public Works with its Secretary ASM Rashidul Hai in the chair.

    The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks as to why it should not be directed to take necessary steps to ensure the availability of actual share of the Ganges water at Farakka point as per the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India.

  • People suffer for lack of public toilets in Barisal

    The Barisal City Corporation has only seven public toilets for about five lakh dwellers of the city of 45 square kilometres. The inadequate public toilet facilities cause immense sufferings to the city dwellers as well as people visiting the city for various purposes, people at different areas in the city said, adding that women are the worst suffers. Jahangir Alam and Matiur Rahman, officials of sanitation and health department of BCC, said on average there is one public toiled in the city in every 6.5 square kilometres of area and for over 71,000 people.

  • Call to introduce food rationing for RMG workers

    Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Workers' Trade Union Centre yesterday demanded budgetary allocation to introduce food rationing for 2.5 million workers in the sector. In a statement the Centre leaders said the government and the factory owners should create a joint fund to begin the factory-based rationing of food. Faced with soaring prices of daily commodities, they said the low-paid workers are struggling to meet their daily needs. The workers, mostly female, are enormously contributing to the national economy but their lives are at stake, they added.

  • HC order on writ petition today

    The High Court will deliver today its order on a writ petition seeking necessary steps to ensure the availability of due share of Ganges water at Farakka point as per the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India. An HC bench of Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Rezaul Haque concluded the hearing yesterday and fixed the date for its order on the petition. Advocate Tajul Islam, counsel for the petitioners, yesterday submitted that Bangladesh has not been getting actual share of Ganges water as per the treaty.
