  • Develop drought-, flood-resistant crops to face climate change

    Global warming will lead to increasing frequency of drought, which sometimes has greater negative impacts on crops than other natural calamities do, speakers at a seminar said yesterday. They called on researchers to develop drought- and flood-tolerant crop varieties, as the people have no alternative but to adapt to changing climate conditions. They also called on the government and development partners to allocate adequate funds for this purpose.

  • Call to re-fix CNG-run bus fares

    Consumers Association of Bangladesh (Cab), the country's only watchdog body that promotes and protects consumer rights, yesterday demanded the government to re-fix the fares of CNG-run buses. They also demanded the authorities to include representatives from customers to re-fix fares at reasonable rates, and called for stopping the present system of collecting fares of the CNG-run buses. Cab in a press release urged the government to keep the list of road distance of all metropolitan cities at different bus stands in the city.

  • Resurgence of malaria

    THE resurgence of malaria in some Asian and African countries has become a matter of concern for governments and doctors, as the disease and the mosquitoes that carry it are increasingly developing resistance to the traditional methods of control. Reports from Brazil and South-East Asia, in particular, show that insecticides like DDT no longer work, and some of the bacteria which mosquitoes inject into the patients' blood have become immune to drugs like chloroquine. So the number of deaths and debilitations caused by malaria has been on the rise in some third world countries.

  • Renovated canal brings boon for Rangpur town dwellers

    About 1,20,000 dwellers of Rangpur town have started getting benefit following renovation of century-old Shyama Sundari canal. About 70 per cent of the renovation works on the 14km-long canal has been completed at a cost of about Tk 16 crore. Rest of the work is expected to be completed by November this year. Re-excavation on the canal from Rangpur cantonment to Shapla point have been completed, concrete piling set, grass carpeting at some points completed while tree plantation will begin soon, said Rangpur Municipality Chairman Abdur Rouf Manik.

  • Per capita income leaps to $599

    Per capita income in Bangladesh has shot up to $ 599 this fiscal year from the previous year's $523, demonstrating that the country's overall income has significantly gone up despite many odds. The odds include fall in growth by one to three percentage points in agriculture, manufacturing, construction and service sectors. According to the latest national accounts data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the increase in per capita income is very significant because it (per capita income) used to be $440 in fiscal 2003-4, $463 in 04-5 and $476 in 05-6.

  • Saarc ministerial meeting on climate change on July 3

    The Saarc ministerial meeting on climate change will be held in the city on July 3. Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the meeting that will be preceded by an expert level meeting on July 1 and 2. The meeting will be held in the backdrop of growing concern for adverse impact of climate change, particularly sea level rise of some countries of the region, official sources said yesterday. In view of growing concern for climate change, the 29th session of the Saarc council of ministers in New Delhi in December last year decided to hold the ministerial meeting.

  • Lives, environment, ecology at risk as illegal hill cutting still rampant in Khagrachhari

    Unabated hill cutting in eight upazilas under Khagrachhari district is posing serious threat to lives, natural environment and biodiversity of the hill district. As hill cutting continues in the name of development work, houses and business centres are being made ignoring existing environmental laws and defying ban by Department of Environment (DoE).

  • DCC to give land for water pump

    Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka yesterday announced that a plot of land would be allocated for setting up a water-pump at Ward No 48 (Hazaribagh area) in the city for supplying of pure drinking water. He said a modern community centre would also be constructed in the ward for holding social and familial ceremonies. He made this announcement while addressing as the chief guest at a meeting on the occasion of inaugurating a newly built Surjer Hasi Clinic at Gojmohol area of Hazaribagh.

  • Bumper yield fails to cheer up farmers in Thakurgaon, Panchagarh as price too low

    Despite bumper production of maize in Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts, farmers are frustrated due to its drastic fall of prices in the local markets. About 1,57,920 tonnes of maize was produced in the two districts against the target of 1,28,000 tonnes in this season. Maize was cultivated on 19,450 hectares of land against the target of 18,425 hectares with the production target of 1,07,234 tonnes in Thakurgaon, Agriculture Extension Department (AED) officials said.

  • ADB offers $130m to tackle food crisis

    The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is going to provide Bangladesh with food assistance of $130 million as budget support to meet the government's food requirement under its social safety net programmes in next fiscal year. Earlier, the government sought $200 million from ADB, which is acting as mediator for Bangladesh to get food aid from other development partners so that people don't face crisis.
