    The United Nations yesterday launched a 33.5 million dollar appeal to aid relief efforts in southwest China where a magnitude-8.0 earthquake on May 12 left nearly 70,000 people dead. "It is the hope of the United Nations and the international community that China will quickly recover from this enormous tragedy," Khalid Malik, UN resident coordinator in China, said in a statement. The appeal will address the needs of the poor and vulnerable among the affected population, who are trying to rebuild after having survived the devastating earthquake, the statement said.

    BEIJING: If bad weather threatens the August 8 opening of Beijing's Olympic Games, then meteorologists may change the weather, according to an official. Chen Zhenlin, a vice director with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), made the statement on Tuesday at a press conference held at the Beijing International Media Center. Meteorological departments will consult the Beijing municipal government whether or not to change the city's weather, said Mr. Chen.

The largest public green space in the country, a 680-hectare Olympic Forest Park will soon open its oxygen-laden doors to the public. Built at the cost of 7.7 billion yuan ($1.12b) over a three-year period, the Forest Park is located at the northern end of the south-north axis around which the Olympic village is constructed.

    Beijing : The recent devastating earthquake in southwest China has pushed back 1.4 million farmers into absolute poverty, an official said. The May 12 quake of magnitude 8, the deadliest disaster which struck the country in last three decades, has ravaged vast areas and flattened homes in Sichuan province and some other regions, leaving a gigantic task of rehabilitation. "The damage is so massive and many farmers have reversed into poverty again,' Fan Xiaojian, Director of the State Council and the cabinets leading group office of poverty-alleviation and development, said.

  • CITES permits China to import ivory, Indian tuskers at risk

    In a move that potentially puts India's elephants at risk, China was on Tuesday approved as trading partner for stockpiles of ivory from Africa by the 57th Standing Committee meeting of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) in Geneva. A decision was taken to allow 108 tonnes of ivory, from Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe to be sold to China as a possible partner; before this, Japan was approved as a trading partner, which means an auction will be held to decide which country purchases the ivory.
