World Bank (WB) consultants on Monday offered their services to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) for reducing water losses in the city to ensure round-the-clock supply of drinking water while utilising the available sources. The WB experts on a three-day visit to Rawalpindi would come up with a methodology for Wasa to reduce line losses by identifying faults in the water supply networks, replacement of pipelines, unaccountable water and water theft in various areas of Rawalpindi.
Asian Development Bank will provide US $0.8 million for Market Infrastructure Project Punjab (formerly Rural Business Development Project and Rural Economy Business Development Project), which will support development of an improved agro-marketing network, with infrastructure investment for efficient commodity supply chains, and associated regulatory and product quality improvement.

): Irrigation department has initiated a vigorous campaign against water thieves. On the direction of Irrigation Secretary Babar Hassan Bharwana, SE Irrigation Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal and XEN Muhammad Asghar Dogar met DPO Shahzad Sultan and sought his help in booking the water pilferers. The DPO assured the Irrigation officers of his all-out support in bringing the water thieves to book. Irrigation Secretary Babar Hassan Bharwana issued this directive on the request of MNA Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, hoping the drive would help the tail farmers get their due share of irrigation water.
The Pai Forest is facing a drought-like situation due to acute shortage of water and its wildlife is in danger due to vanishing flora and fauna and excessive hunting in the area. The WWF Programme Coordinator, Nasir Panhwar, has said this while briefing a team of journalists from different parts of Sindh at the Pai Forest lodge, some 10km away from the National Highway near Sakrand.
The Senate was told on Friday that Sindh, Northern Areas and Fata had became virtual nurseries of polio posing a serious threat to the country. Holding local governments responsible for the failure of polio eradication programme, Minis-ter for Health Sherry Rehman said during the question hour that vaccines became ineffective because immunisation teams did not keep them at the required temperature. She said that lack of checks along the border with Afghanistan also contributed to a dramatic increase in polio cases.
The federal government has banned the import of tigers, lions and other big cat species. According to highly placed sources, earlier, the federal government, following regular incidents of smuggling of big cats by certain wildlife traffickers, which were exposed by the media while the official regulators either remained unaware or were hand in glove with the traffickers, had refused to entertain any requests for permission from these traffickers for the import of big cats till their cases were disposed of.
